Before knowing the benefits of milk thistle, it is important that you know what exactly a milk thistle is. Milk thistle is basically an herb that helps the body and its different organs to remove any kind of toxic materials which are present. It helps effective functioning of the liver by helping it to filter out all the waste materials which may cause harm to the body.

Thistle consists of some active components better known as silymarin and silybin which lend a hand to the smooth functioning of the liver as well as the other organs. Silymarin also helps to shield the kidney from damage. It is anti oxidant in nature and thus is at par with vitamins like vitamin C and D.

Milk thistle helps in various ways.

  • It helps in lowering of the blood sugar level in patients with diabetes.
  • It is also a great remedy for diseases like hepatitis B, cirrhosis of liver, and fatigue.
  • It is a great antioxidant for tissue repairs in the body.

How is it consumed?

Milk thistle can be consumed in the form of capsules or in the natural plant form. Always read safety advice on the packaging if you are giving it to children.  The plants can be consumed and eaten like artichokes, the leaves, once trimmed of the spines, can be served in a salad. They taste very similar to spinach leaves. The seeds of the milk thistle plant can be roasted and ground like coffee beans. If you are giving it to children you can make it into a healthy and tasty soup with other flavours that your children enjoy.
